由于头部外伤脑组织受到损害，最初出现意识丧失，恢复后多有健忘、逆行性健忘、科尔撒科夫综合征、神经衰弱状态、性格变化等症状。对这种非肉眼所能见的脑组织变化称为脑震荡。部分脑组织受破坏者称为脑挫伤。脑震荡可能是脑组织全部功能障碍所致的特有症状。发病机理可以考虑是由于脑的血液循环障碍、蛛网膜下腔脑脊液循环和延髓的障碍。
