Transcriptional reporter systems have been extensively used to measure gene expression. Facile measurement of a reporter signal enables the study of gene expression in cases where protein product quantification is problematic. Reporters, such as /gbgalactostdase, provide convenient chromogenic assays (1 ). More recently, bioluminescence has been developed as a monitormg system (1 ). Reporter gene systems may be located extrachromosomally or integrated into the chromosome.
