鸟类的尾椎并不像其它多种脊椎动物那样向体外突出而形成尾，而是由其末端长出一组扇状的正羽，称之为尾羽。在飞行时它起舵的作用，故又称舵羽。在栖息时则有平衡躯体的作用。在尾羽基部的上下，有一组覆盖于其上之小形正羽，称为尾复羽（ tail-co-vert）。鸟类的尾是由尾羽和尾复羽组成的。
