The conversion of wavelengths of light into information useful to the brain requires a tremendous degree of anatomic and functional
specialization. The mammalian retina is a remarkably refined and adapted tissue that is capable of light detection, processing,
and transmission of information to other sites in the central nervous system. In this chapter, we provide a brief overview
of the anatomical features of the mammalian retina and discuss regional variability observed in the eyes of humans and other
species.
