The molecular biology of yeasts places increasing emphasis on the genetic and biochemical complexity of the cell in the contest of its spatial organization. This development has led to a renaissance of yeast cytology. Classical cytological methods are being replaced by new techniques partially adopted from related fields of cell biology. The remarkable refinement of indirect immunofluorescence methods has been a great advance, which has opened a new chapter in the precise localization of enzymes and other gene products, including cytoskeletal and karyoskeletal components. Exploiting these techniques, the yeast cell can be approached at almost all levels of its structural organization.
