感光色素或称视紫红质的蛋白质部分（视蛋白），亦即与11-顺型-视黄醛结合成为感光色素。不同吸收光谱特性的各感光色素的性质，主要是由于视蛋白的性质的差异，并可进一步进行区分，在暗处起视觉作用的视杆细胞感光色素的蛋白质部分称为暗视蛋白（scoptosin），在明处起视觉作用的视锥感光色素的蛋白质部分称为光视蛋白（photopsin）。视杆细胞感光色素的分子量约3万8千，含有短糖链，但不溶于水，氨基酸组成的疏水基因占50％以上。
