第12对脑神经，为羊膜类所独有。原来是脊神经，由延脑及脊髓前角的前外侧沟出来的许多神经纤维集合而形成舌下神经，出颅后分布至舌肌和一部分颈前肌，在中途和颈神经丛相吻合。
