在环节动物和节肢动物中，于每一体节腹侧正中线左右各有一个神经节，相互进行横向联系而成左右连索，进行纵向联系的而成前后连索，此称为腹神经索。在昆虫和其他一些动物，每一体节一对神经节左右贴近，看起来状似一个。在螠虫类，与神经节的纵、横联系区别不明显，只显示一条棒状结构。
