外观上机体的机能虽然停止，但可以恢复过来，这种状态称为假死。此词通常还更广泛地使用。即临床死亡是以呼吸和心跳停止为指标，但冬眠状态，即使保持微弱的呼吸和心跳而在意识丧失的条件下，也常常称为假死。asphyxia一词是来自希腊语，为脉搏消失（ sphyxis）之意，但多狭义地用于窒息状态，例如分娩时的胎儿假死。
