【背景知识】
色氨酸是一种必需氨基酸，它不是由人体形成的，必须通过食物提供。色氨酸在血清素合成中起着重要作用，它是唯一可以合成血清素的物质。
5-羟色胺本身是在广泛的递质系统的扩展中释放的，该递质系统具有全球调节作用，因此其活性会影响生活的不同领域。最后但并非最不重要的一点是，这种活动也是由于当前的色氨酸水平。如果血浆中的色氨酸减少，它就不再可用于血清素合成，随后也不能用于褪黑激素合成。结果是情绪波动或情感障碍、攻击性、睡眠障碍、饮食障碍或抑郁症。 这些疾病症状可以通过服用色氨酸来缓解。然而，色氨酸的适应症只有在你知道水平的情况下才有意义。 该测试可用于确定这一点。
