活性酯可以与伯胺基在PH7-8.5条件下生成稳定的酰胺键。巯基与马来酰亚胺在PH6.5-7.5条件下生成稳定的硫醚键，巯基还可以用于修饰金纳米粒子。聚乙二醇化可以提高聚乙二醇分子的稳定性，降低其免疫原性。它还可以抑制带电分子与修饰表面的非特异性结合。
