细胞活性测定试剂盒广泛应用于细胞生物学的各类实验中，例如研究生长因子、细胞活素类和培养基组分，细胞毒性因子和淋巴细胞的活性。
MTT和XTT都是检测细胞存活和生长的方法，MTT的产物为水不溶性的蓝紫色结晶甲瓒（Formazan），并沉积在细胞中，需要加有机溶剂溶解，由于在去上清的操作时会有可能带走小部分的甲瓒，故重复性略差。XTT作为线粒体脱氢酶的作用底物，被活细胞还原成水溶性的橙黄色甲臢产物，当XTT与电子偶合剂（例如PMS）联合应用时，其所产生的水溶性的甲臢产物的吸光度与活细胞的数量成正比。
XTT优点：
1. 使用方便，省去了洗涤细胞
2. 检测快速
3. 灵敏度高，甚至可以测定较低细胞密度
4. 重复性优于MTT
