Vaspin (Visceral Adipose-Specific SERPIN) is a newly described adipokine. Vaspin has three β-sheets, nine α-helices, and one central loop; the structure is part of the set of distinctive features that are descriptive of Serpin family members. Vaspin is also a unique insulin sensitizing adipocytokine in obesity. Serpin B5 is a secretive protein that belongs to the Serpin (Serine Protease Inhibitor) family and Ov-serpin subfamily. Serpin B5 is expressed in the prostate, testis, intestine, tongue, lung, and thymus. Serpin B5 exhibits no serine protease inhibitory activity. Serpin B5 also functions as tumor suppressor an angiogenesis inhibitor. It has been shown that Serpin B5 blocks the growth, invasion, and metastatic properties of mammary tumors. Furthermore, high expression of Serpin B5 is linked to squamous cell carcinoma in non-small-cell lung cancer.

SERPINI2 is a secreted protein of the serpin family. Serpins are a group of proteins with similar structures that were first identified as a set of proteins able to inhibit proteases. As protease inhibitors, serpins have an array of functions including regulating blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, the complement pathway, angiogenesis, inflammation, tumor suppression, extracellular matrix remodeling, and cell motility. SERPINI2 is expressed in human tissues including pancreas and adipose tissues. Mutations of human SERPINI2 can directly result in conditions such as acinar cell apoptosis and malabsorption.
