醛酸的一种,L型相当于 L-古洛糖一位上的醛基被羧基置换的形态,或 D-葡糖醛酸的一位醛基变成醇基。在大多数动植物中,以古洛糖酸γ -内酯形态存在。古洛糖酸可由特异的氧化酶脱氢反应而变成维生素 C( L-抗坏血酸)。因为人、猿、豚鼠中不具有这种酶,所以必须从外界摄取维生素 C。另一方面,则存在着 L-古洛糖酸→ 3-酮 -L-古洛糖酸→ L-木酮糖→ L-木糖醇→ D-木酮糖的代谢途径,代表性的戊糖尿症,可在尿中发现古洛糖酸的代谢中间物质 L-木酮糖。
一种戊酮糖。L-木酮糖在戊糖尿症的尿中被排出。在生物体内 L型与 D型的木酮糖先还原成木糖醇,继之再氧化而相互转换。 D-木酮糖与 ATP反应生成 D-木酮糖 -5-磷酸而进入磷酸戊糖途径。此外萄葡糖经过 6-磷酸萄糖酸→ D-核酮糖 -5-磷酸形成 D-木酮糖 -5-磷酸,因此成为另一糖酵解途径的磷酸戊糖途径的重要的中间物。
