型，广泛分布于高等植物中，在未成熟的果实或休眠种子里含量很高。也以葡糖苷的形态存在。除促进器官脱落外，还能抑制枝条的生长和种子、球根、顶芽的发芽。若连续对叶施用此酸，即产生休眠芽，对休眠形成起主要作用。此外还有迅速关闭气孔的作用。一旦植物体处于缺水状态，即可迅速合成脱落酸而关闭气孔，因此也与水分代谢的调节有关。是一种倍半萜，在生物体内是经甲羟戊酸的途径合成的。它是广泛分布于植物中的生长抑制物——抑制剂β（ inhibitorβ）的主要成分。
