Introduction Bone morphogenetic protein 1, or BMP1, belongs to the peptidase M12A family of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). Unlike other BMPs, it does not belong to the TGFβ family, instead, it is a metalloprotease possessing an astacin-like protease domain that is able to cleave the C-terminus of procollagen I, II and III. It plays an important role in bone and cartilage development.
