提纯RNA的方法一般有两种，离心法和有机抽取法（例如Trizol）。Norgen Biotek是世界上第一家真正意义上的生产以离心柱（Spin Columns）为平台，并能纯化所有种类RNA（包括小分子RNA）的公司。

Norgen Biotek和其他公司生产的以离心纯化为原理的试剂盒比：

• 其他公司一般都使用硅材料（silica matrix）为填充物。硅材料的缺点是在没有酚存在的情况下，不能回收所有的RNA，使得其纯化效率很低，特别是对小RNA（例如microRNA）,其回收率几乎为零。这也是为什么很多客户在使用了其他公司的以离心为原理的总RNA纯化产品后，往往得不到预想结果的原因。

Norgen Biotek和其他公司生产的以Trizol原理的试剂盒比较：

• 在这些方法中，层析会造成有机试剂的残留，从而抑制许多下游实验的进行。
• 许多实验室由于健康和环境的因素，已经放弃了以酚抽为原理的提纯方法。
• 对大样品，使用Trizol的效果还可以，但同时也由于基因组DNA的增加，会阻止RNA的沉淀，从而间接地降低了纯化效率
• 对小量样品，使用Trizol的效果往往不佳。
• 使用Trizol中，乙醇沉淀（ethanol precipitation）效果的好坏和RNA的量有密切的关系，因此对于少量样品，沉淀法往往得不到最终的RNA产物。
• 由于许多实验（e.g. qRT-PCR），并不需要很多量的RNA，因此Trizol方法已经逐渐被其他方法所代替。

Norgen Biotek采用的柱子填充物是一种新型的，并有专利保护的非硅胶材料。可以在没有酚等有害有机溶剂存在的情况下，纯化包括microRNA在内的所有RNA,而且其纯化回收效率高达99%。人们一直认为如果要纯化microRNA,必须要用Trizol，而不是离心法。这种论断已经过时。Norgen Biotek总RNA纯化试剂盒不仅避免Trizol带给实验者的健康损害，而且可以纯化出包括miroRNA在内的所有RNA。因此Norgen Biotek是一款真正意义上的绿色产品。
