Nonfat dry milk is commonly added to blocking buffers to minimize background noise in immunodetection procedures such as western blotting, immunofluorescence, and IHC. During western blotting, milk can be used to block non-specific binding to nitrocellulose or PVDF membranes. Milk can also be used for blocking and dilution of antibodies during immuno-staining of cells or tissues.
