Rabbit anti Human desmin antibody recognizes desmin (DES). Desmin is the intermediate filament protein in striated muscle, and maintains the structural and functional integrity of muscle cells (Singh and Robbins 2018). Mutations in the desmin gene, or post-translational modifications, cause skeletal and cardiac myopathies known as desmin related myopathies (DRMs) and include mitochondrial defects, cardiomyocyte death, muscle degeneration and other conditions (Capetanaki et al. 2015). Desmin is frequently down-regulated in cardiac pathology, and is believed to play a role in progression of heart failure (Deliu et al. 2017). Desmin expression is significantly expressed in colorectal cancer (CRC) and adenomas compared with normal colonic tissue and disrupts the function of the tumor suppressor p53, a mechanism which could explain the poor prognosis associated with high desmin expression (Li et al. 2017).
