Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily A member 1 (TRPA1) is a non-selective cation channel predominantly expressed in sensory neurons, where it functions as a key sensor for environmental and endogenous irritants. Part of the larger TRP channel family, TRPA1 is especially known for its role in detecting noxious stimuli, including chemical irritants, cold temperatures, and oxidative stress. It is activated by a wide range of compounds such as mustard oil, cinnamaldehyde, and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species. TRPA1 plays a critical role in pain perception (nociception), inflammatory responses, and respiratory irritation, making it an important target for research in chronic pain, asthma, neurogenic inflammation, and sensory disorders.
