Sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) is a membrane protein primarily expressed in the proximal tubules of the kidney, where it plays a key role in glucose reabsorption. SGLT2 transports glucose from the filtrate in the renal tubules back into the bloodstream by coupling it with sodium transport, thus preventing glucose loss in urine under normal physiological conditions. It accounts for approximately 90% of renal glucose reabsorption. In recent years, SGLT2 has gained significant attention as a therapeutic target in type 2 diabetes mellitus, with SGLT2 inhibitors emerging as effective drugs not only for glycemic control but also for providing cardiovascular and renal protection.
