Rac1 (Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1) is a small (~21 kDa) signaling GTPase belonging to the Rho family of GTPases. It functions as a molecular switch cycling between an active GTP-bound state and an inactive GDP-bound state, regulating diverse cellular processes. Rac1 plays a pivotal role in actin cytoskeleton organization, influencing cell morphology, motility, and adhesion. It is involved in the formation of lamellipodia, membrane ruffles, and cell migration. Additionally, Rac1 participates in cell cycle progression, transcriptional regulation, and reactive oxygen species production. Dysregulation of Rac1 activity has been implicated in various pathological conditions, including cancer progression, neurodevelopmental disorders, and insulin resistance. Due to its central role in multiple signaling pathways, Rac1 is considered a potential therapeutic target in several diseases.
