Survivin, also known as BIRC5, is a multifunctional protein that plays a crucial role in inhibiting apoptosis (programmed cell death) and regulating cell division. As a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) protein family, survivin contains a baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domain, which allows it to interfere with the activation of caspases, the enzymes responsible for executing apoptosis. Beyond its anti-apoptotic function, survivin is a key component of the chromosomal passenger complex, essential for proper chromosome alignment and segregation during mitosis. Notably, survivin is highly expressed during embryonic development but is largely absent in most differentiated adult tissues. However, it is prominently upregulated in a wide range of human cancers, including lung, colon, pancreas, prostate, and breast cancers. This cancer-specific expression pattern makes survivin a potential biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, as well as a promising target for therapeutic interventions.
