CD11b, also known as Integrin alpha M (ITGAM), is a cell surface protein that is part of the integrin family. It is primarily expressed on the surface of myeloid cells, including monocytes, neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells. CD11b forms a heterodimer with CD18 (Integrin beta-2) to create the Mac-1 integrin, which is involved in various cellular functions, including cell adhesion, migration, and phagocytosis. CD11b plays a crucial role in the immune response, helping immune cells recognize and bind to inflammatory signals and pathogens. It also facilitates the clearance of apoptotic cells and is involved in leukocyte trafficking during immune responses, particularly in the context of inflammation and immune cell recruitment. Given its key role in immune function, CD11b is also studied in the context of autoimmune diseases, cancer, and inflammatory disorders.
