FUN14 domain-containing protein 1 (FUNDC1) is a mitochondrial protein that plays a critical role in regulating mitophagy, the process by which damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria are selectively degraded to maintain cellular homeostasis. FUNDC1 is involved in the quality control of mitochondria and is essential for mitochondrial dynamics, including the regulation of mitochondrial fission and fusion. It functions as a receptor for mitophagy by interacting with various proteins that promote the removal of damaged mitochondria. Additionally, FUNDC1 is implicated in cellular responses to hypoxia and stress, and its dysregulation has been linked to several diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and cardiovascular diseases.
