eNOS (endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase) is an enzyme primarily found in the endothelial cells lining blood vessels. It plays a crucial role in the production of nitric oxide (NO), a signaling molecule that regulates vascular tone, blood flow, and blood pressure. eNOS catalyzes the conversion of L-arginine to L-citrulline, releasing nitric oxide as a byproduct. Nitric oxide produced by eNOS helps in vasodilation, promoting the relaxation of blood vessels, and thus contributes to circulatory health. Additionally, eNOS is involved in various other physiological processes such as immune response, neuronal communication, and platelet function. Dysregulation of eNOS activity has been associated with conditions like hypertension, atherosclerosis, and vascular diseases.
