Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is a transcription factor encoded by the MITF gene, primarily involved in the regulation of genes that control cell differentiation, survival, and pigmentation. MITF plays a crucial role in the development and function of melanocytes, the cells responsible for pigment production in the skin, eyes, and hair. It is also involved in the differentiation of osteoclasts, mast cells, and sensory neurons. MITF is critical for melanin biosynthesis, and mutations in the MITF gene are associated with hereditary conditions such as Waardenburg syndrome, Tietz syndrome, and various forms of pigmentary disorders. Additionally, MITF has been implicated in cancer biology, particularly in melanoma, where its expression can influence tumor progression and response to therapy.
