SCN2A (also known as NaV1.2) is a voltage-gated sodium channel protein encoded by the SCN2A gene. It is predominantly expressed in neurons and plays a crucial role in the generation and propagation of action potentials in nerve cells. As a member of the voltage-gated sodium channel family, NaV1.2 allows the rapid influx of sodium ions (Na⁺) into the cell upon membrane depolarization, which is essential for initiating and conducting electrical signals along nerves. SCN2A/NaV1.2 is critical for normal neural excitability, muscle contraction, and electrical signaling in the central nervous system (CNS), including the brain and spinal cord. Mutations in the SCN2A gene have been linked to a variety of neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and channelopathies that can affect neuronal function and lead to disorders of excitability.
