MEK2 (Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Kinase 2), also known as MAP2K2, is a dual-specificity kinase that plays a pivotal role in the RAS/MAPK signaling pathway. It functions by phosphorylating and activating the extracellular signal-regulated kinases ERK1 and ERK2, which are critical for regulating cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and survival. MEK2 is activated through phosphorylation by upstream kinases like RAF, enabling it to transmit mitogenic and stress signals from the cell membrane to the nucleus. Genetic mutations in the MAP2K2 gene have been associated with developmental disorders, including cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome, characterized by heart defects, distinctive facial features, and cognitive impairments. Due to its central role in cell signaling, MEK2 is also a target of interest in cancer research and therapeutic development.
