大肠细菌（ E. coli ）为埃希氏菌属 (escherichia) 代表菌。一般多不致病，为人和动物肠道中的常居菌，在一定条件下可引起肠道外感染。某些血清型菌株的致病性强，引起腹泻，统称病致病大肠杆菌。大小 0.4 ～ 0.7 × 1 ～ 3um, 无芽胞 , 大多数菌株有动力。有普通菌毛与性菌毛，有些菌株有多糖类包膜，革兰氏阴性杆菌。在血琼脂平板上，有些菌株产生β型溶血。在鉴别性或选择性培养基上形成有颜色、直径 2 ～ 3mm 的光滑型菌落。
