Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein (COMP) Induced Arthritis in the C57BL/6 Mouse - The Methodology
Genetically modified mouse strains have most often been developed on the C57BL/6 genetic background, which has restricted their use for rheumatology research due to the lack of reliable model for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for this strain. The C57BL/6 mice possess the MHC class II haplotype H‑2b, which has so far prohibited induction of any known model for rheumatoid arthritis.
Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein (COMP) Induced Arthritis is a new model for rheumatoid arthritis in the C57BL/6 mouse. It is established by immunization by native COMP and leads to severe arthritis with characteristic T and B cell responses against defined COMP peptides.
COMP induced arthritis provides disease model to study the immune priming, the effector and chronic phases of arthritis and can be used for efficient induction of arthritis in the C57BL/6J mice.
The key for successful arthritis experiments to solve your research questions is a thorough understanding of the model with its advantages and limitations.
