背景资料:This gene encodes the founding member of the Aktserine-threonine protein kinase gene family that also includes Akt2and Akt3. This kinase is a major downstream effector of thephosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway that mediates theeffects of various growth factors such as platelet-derived growthfactor (PDGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin andinsulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I). It is activated throughrecruitment to cellular membranes by PI3K lipid products and byphosphorylation by 3-phosphoinositide dependent kinase-1. It thenfurther phosphorylates different downstream proteins in response tovarious extracellular signals and thus plays a pivotal role inmediating a variety of cellular processes, such as glucosemetabolism, glycogen biosynthesis, protein synthesis and turn over, inflammatory response, cell survival (anti-apoptosis) anddevelopment. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encodingdifferent isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided byRefSeq].
