Description :Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) isoform 1, also known as p16-INK4a, is aninhibitor of the cyclin dependent kinases CDK4 and CDK6. CDKN2A acts as a negativeregulator of cell cycle progression by preventing phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein(pRb) by cyclin-dependent kinases. CDKN2A expression is upregulated during cellularsenescence and aging. It functions as a tumor suppressor to induce cell cycle arrest and agingof normal tissues. Germ line point mutations, homozygous deletion, or promoter methylation inthe human CDKN2A locus causes uncontrolled cell proliferation, which results in a variety ofmalignancies such as melanoma, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, gastric cancer, and esophagealcancer.
