吲哚 -3-乙酸 indole-3-acetic acid， indol- yl-3-acetic acid 最初曾称为异植物生长索，亦称吲哚乙酸，缩写 IAA。系天然植物生长素中在植物界分布最广的，作为确定植物生长素类的作用效价的基准物质。此物质在大肠杆菌等多数的细菌或一种根霉（ Rhizopus su-inus）、酵母、玉米黑粉病菌等真菌类中能合成，据称绿色的鞭毛虫类或多数的藻类也能合成。在地衣类以上的植物中相当普遍地存在，生理作用亦显著。虽也含于人尿中，但认为它是肠内
CH3 COOH，具有刺激性的液体状酸。经醋酸发酵得到食醋。在化学上，是通过乙醇的氧化，或从乙炔经由乙醛而合成。由活化酶的作用成为乙酰辅酶 A而被代谢。
醋杆菌属（ Acetobacter）的细菌。醋酸杆菌常连结成链状。为非运动性的专性好氧性细菌。以其能在 2-11％的醋酸的强酸性条件下可氧化乙醇这一点，与假单胞菌属的细菌相区别。该菌是制造醋酸、葡糖酸、山梨糖等发酵工业的重要细菌，其代表种为醋化醋酸杆菌。
