It is now well established that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) may be reductively dechlorinated by anaerobic microorganisms found in sediments (1 -12 ). This is a potentially important environmental fate of PCBs because the lesser chlorinated congeners formed tend to be more aerobically degradable and less toxic. Remedial action plans for PCB-contaminated sediments should therefore take mto account the extent of dechlorination that has occurred and the potential for further dechlormation.
