维生素 D 或钙化醇是由维生素原形成的，这是由来自太阳光的紫外线辐射催化的甾烷骨架中的 B 环裂解的结果。两种最重要的维生素 D 是维生素 D 和维生素 D。与必须与食物一起摄入的维生素 D 原相反，维生素 D 原也可以在肝脏中形成。
维生素 D 在皮肤中形成或与维生素 D 一起与食物一起摄入，与血浆中的维生素 D 结合蛋白结合，转运到肝脏，在 25 位羟基化形成 25-OH-D。95% 以上血清中可测得的 25-OH-D 是 25-OH-D。 25-OH-D 仅在服用维生素 D 药物的患者中测量。
