This gene encodes a subunit of the cytochrome bc1 complex, which plays an important role in the mitochondrial respiratory chain by transferring electrons from the Rieske iron-sulfur protein to cytochrome c. Mutations in this gene may cause mitochondrial complex III deficiency, nuclear type 6.

细胞色素c1 为细胞色素 c的一种，是药剂师寺英次郎、奥贯一男（ 1940）从牛的心肌中发现的，也称为细胞色素 e。可在动植物、酵母的线粒体内膜和某种细菌中见到。含有血红素 c的还原型具有 553、 523、 418毫微米的吸收带，氧化型为 410— 411毫微米。用表面活性剂可从组织中溶解提取出来。最小分子量约 3.6万，而在溶液中显示出 36万的分子量。标准氧化还原电位 E＇＝ 0.223V，等电点 pH3.6。不能自动氧化，可被氧化型的细胞色素 c氧化，参与从细胞色素 b

细胞色素b/f复合物(cytochrome b6-f complex)
类囊体膜上可分离出来的多亚基膜蛋白。它由四个多肽组成: 即细胞色素f、细胞色素b6、一个铁硫蛋白和一个分子量为17kDa的多肽。前三个都是电子载体。细胞色素f也是c型的细胞色素,与线粒体的细胞色素c1关系密切。该复合物位于基质面, 功能是参与电子传递。
