In Vitro: Bithionol sulfoxide (0.1-10 mg/mL, 72 h) shows toxicity to Neoparamoeba spp parasites in sea water. Bithionol sulfoxide (1-1000 μg/plate) exhibits mutagenic activity, in the absence of metabolic activation, in strains TA98 and TA100 (in Salmonella/mammalian microsome test).
In Vivo: Bithionol sulfoxide (oral administration) shows LD50 values of 1000-5000 mg/kg (mice) and about 5000 mg/kg (rats), and increased serum AST at high doses (5000-100 mg/kg). Bithionol sulfoxide (80 and 90 mg/kg, oral administration) is effective against natural rumen fluke infections in dairy cattle.
