    基质金属蛋白酶(MMPs)又称基质蛋白酶(Matrixins)，是一类依赖于
    锌和钙的内肽酶，在细胞外基质(ECM)的分解中起着重要的作用。它们
    在胚胎发育、形态发生、生殖和组织重建等正常生理过程中起着重要作
    用。他们还参与许多病理过程，如关节炎，癌症和心血管疾病。虽然新
    合成 MMPs 的数量主要由转录水平进行调节，但其蛋白水解活性通过酶
    原激活进行活化，在内源性抑制剂α2-球蛋白和组织金属蛋白酶(TIMPs)
    作用下被抑制。在 TIMP 家族的四个已知成员中，TIMP-2 既有所有 TIMP
    的共同特征，也有其自身独有的特征。共有的特征包括 12 个半胱氨酸
    残基，形成 6 个二硫键，N-末端和 C-末端各有 3 个二硫键，N 端结构域
    负责与 MMPs 以非共价键紧密结合。TIMP-2 的独特特征包括其 C 端结
    构域与 pro-MMP-2 的血红素结合蛋白样结构域结合，这种相互作用在
    通过活化的 MMP-14 来激活 pro-MMP-2 的过程必不可少的。
