The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane protein involved in the regulation of planar cell polarity, especially in the stereociliary bundles of the cochlea. The encoded protein transmits directional signals to individual cells or groups of cells in epithelial sheets. This protein is also involved in the development of the neural plate. Plays a role in the regulation of planar cell polarity, particularly in the orientation of stereociliary bundles in the cochlea. 本世纪30年代，Gorer在鉴定近交系小鼠血型抗原时曾发现4组红细胞抗原，命名为抗原Ⅰ、Ⅱ、Ⅲ和Ⅳ。其中抗原Ⅱ只存在于某些品系而不存在于另一些品系小鼠中。其后，Snell等用近交系小鼠中生长的肿瘤分别移植于其杂交子代，肿瘤只能在抗原Ⅱ阳性小鼠体内生长，在抗原Ⅱ阴性小鼠体内则被排斥，证明了抗原Ⅱ是一种组织相容性抗原，故称小鼠的组织相容性抗原为H-2(histocompatibility antigen-2,H-2)。以后，相继证明编码H-2抗原的基因定位于小鼠第17对染色体上，并证明是由多基因座组成
