一系列的酶，才具有溶菌、溶细胞的免疫活性。已知补体的激活途径有二：一是早期发现的经典途径，又称C1 通路；二是近年发现的替代途径，又称C3 旁路。 在补体激活的经典途径中，要有抗原抗体复合物存在，以及补体系统的11种蛋白质参加。在激活过程中，这11种蛋白成分可分为三种功能单位：识别单位，由Clq 、Clr 、和Cls 组成；激活单位，由C4 、C2 、C3 组成；攻击单位，由C5 、C6 、C7 、C8 和C9 组成。同一功能单位的补体分子具有化学亲合性，激活后可相互结合
动员感染、炎症反应、免疫反应，出现各种生物学活性的体液成分（主要为血清）之总称。存在于正常血清中，目前已知有 9种成分，分别称为 C1， C2， C3，… C9。 C1和 C2遇热则弱，在 56℃处理 30分钟可灭活。补体含量因动物而不同，其成分亦不同。豚鼠血清中各种成分颇为均衡，含量亦多，因此为许多实验所采用。对 Ag-Ab按 C1， C4， C2， C3， C5， C6， C7， C8， C9的顺序进行反应；但也了解到有按不同顺序发生反应的。抗原为红细胞时，补体以上列
