文献和实验C6 H12 O4 3， 5-二羟 -3-甲基戊酸。是麦尔克（ Merck）公司研究人员在酒精发酵废液中作为乳酸菌的乙酸代替生长因子发现的，最初称为二檞斗酸（ divalonic acid）。后来田村学造又独立地作为日本清酒中的火落菌生长因子发现了这种物质，日名命为火落酸（ hiotic acid），后来统一称为甲羟戊酸。此物呈油状。易溶于水和极性有机溶剂。容易内酯化，产生甲羟戊酸内酯 C6 H10 O3
