文献和实验血型糖蛋白 glycophorin 为红细胞细胞膜的主要糖蛋白，分 A、 B、 C三种，占红细胞细细胞膜外在蛋白质之大部。糖残基都在膜之外侧。血型糖蛋白 A的糖残基都局限在 N末端，朝向膜之外侧， C末端富于亲水性氨基酸，朝向膜之内侧。中间部分富于疏水性氨基酸，形成疏水区埋于膜内。血型糖蛋白 A具 MN血液型活性， B具 Ss血液型活性，也是流感病毒或仙台病毒的受体。
血型糖蛋白又称涎糖蛋白(sialo glycoprotein),因它富含唾液酸。血型糖蛋白是第一个被测定氨基酸序列的蛋白质,有几种类型，包括A、B、C、D。血型糖蛋白B、C、D在红细胞膜中浓度较低。血型糖蛋白A是一种单次跨膜糖蛋白, 由131个氨基酸组成, 其亲水的氨基端露在膜的外侧, 结合16个低聚糖侧链。血型糖蛋白的基本功能可能是在它的唾液酸中含有大量负电荷,防止了红细胞在循环过程中经过狭小血管时相互聚集沉积在血管中。
