Background Information

Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), also known as Gelatinase A or 72 kDa type IV collagenase, is encoded by the MMP2 gene. It plays a critical role in physiological and pathological processes such as extracellular matrix degradation, angiogenesis, inflammatory responses, and tumor invasion. Aberrant MMP-2 activity is associated with various diseases including Torg-Winchester syndrome, multicentric osteolysis, and cancer progression.
