GATA-3 (GATA-binding protein 3) is a zinc finger transcription factor that plays a critical role in regulating gene expression during embryonic development, cellular differentiation, and immune system function. It is a member of the GATA family of transcription factors, which bind to the GATA consensus sequence in DNA. GATA-3 is especially important in the development and function of the T-helper 2 (Th2) cells in the immune system, where it promotes the expression of cytokines like IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Beyond the immune system, GATA-3 is also involved in the development of the nervous system, skin, and mammary glands, and its dysregulation has been linked to various diseases, including cancer and allergic conditions.
