    ​C-reactive protein (CRP) is a pentameric acute-phase protein synthesized by the liver in response to inflammation, particularly following the release of interleukin-6 (IL-6) by macrophages and T cells. As part of the innate immune system, CRP binds to phosphocholine on the surface of dead or dying cells and certain bacteria, activating the complement system via C1q and promoting phagocytosis by macrophages. Clinically, CRP levels are measured to assess inflammation and monitor conditions such as infections, autoimmune disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) tests can detect lower levels of the protein, aiding in the evaluation of heart disease risk.
