Coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1), also known as protein arginine N-methyltransferase 4 (PRMT4), is an enzyme that catalyzes the methylation of arginine residues on histone and non-histone proteins. This post-translational modification plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression by influencing chromatin structure and facilitating the assembly of transcriptional coactivator complexes. CARM1 is particularly significant in the methylation of histone H3 at arginine residues R17 and R26, modifications associated with transcriptional activation. Beyond its role in gene regulation, CARM1 is involved in various biological processes, including autophagy, metabolism, and early development. Its dysregulation has been implicated in several cancers, such as breast, prostate, pancreatic, and lung cancers, making it a potential therapeutic target in oncology.
