Glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK-3β) is a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase encoded by the GSK3B gene. Initially identified for its role in glycogen metabolism, GSK-3β has since been recognized as a key regulator in various cellular processes, including energy metabolism, cell signaling, and neuronal development. In the nervous system, GSK-3β is particularly abundant and plays a critical role in neurogenesis, neuronal migration, differentiation, and survival during brain development. Additionally, GSK-3β is involved in regulating mitochondrial functions such as biogenesis, bioenergetics, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of GSK-3β activity has been implicated in several diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, as well as metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes.
