VE-Cadherin (Vascular Endothelial Cadherin), also known as CD144, is a type of cadherin protein expressed primarily in endothelial cells, which line the blood vessels. It plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and permeability of the endothelial barrier. VE-Cadherin is involved in cell-cell adhesion by mediating homophilic interactions between adjacent endothelial cells. These interactions are essential for the formation and maintenance of the vascular endothelial junctions, which regulate the flow of fluids and molecules across the blood vessel walls. Beyond its structural role, VE-Cadherin is also involved in regulating vascular remodeling, angiogenesis, and vascular inflammation, making it a key player in vascular biology and the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases.
