Anosmin-1 is a glycoprotein primarily involved in the development and function of the nervous system. It is encoded by the KAL1 gene and plays a crucial role in the migration of neurons and the formation of neuronal circuits during early development. Anosmin-1 is known for its interaction with fibronectin and heparan sulfate proteoglycans, which are essential for cellular adhesion and signaling. It is particularly important in the development of the olfactory bulb and the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons. Mutations in the KAL1 gene, which codes for Anosmin-1, are linked to Kallmann syndrome, a condition characterized by anosmia (loss of the sense of smell) and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (impaired sexual development).
